Covering topics from “Abdominal ultrasound” to “Yoga,” the articles are clearly written and well organized, and present concepts in an easily understood style. Where appropriate, entries include a definition, description, causes, symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, prognosis, and prevention. Source notes, black-and-white photos and illustrations, and boxes that contain definitions for terms used in the text are also included. The “see” references make the encyclopedia useful for readers who might not know correct medical terminology. Even the more sophisticated topics, like specific blood tests and diagnostic procedures, are explained in layman’s terms without being oversimplified. In addition to a short glossary, each article includes a list of additional resources, among them books, articles, tapes, URLs, and contact information for associations. These features and the general reading level make this work very useful as a starting point for a lay reader’s medical research; it has twice the number of articles and illustrations as the other leading medical encyclopedia, Magill’s Medical Guide (Salem, rev. ed. 1998).
